Our group, in the broad area of Applied Mathematics, develops and applies methods of Mathematical and Computational Mathematics to model, understand, design and control the dynamics of various phenomena arising in the interphase of Mathematics with Engineering, Physics, Bilogy and Social Sciences.

We are welcoming applications by young and highly motivated scientists to contribute to this exciting joint AvH-FAU effort. Possible research projects include but are not limited to:

• Analysis of Partial Differential Equations (PDE)
• Control of diffusion models arising in Biology and Social Sciences
• Modelling and control of multi-agent systems
• Hyperbolic models arising in traffic flow and energy transport.
• Fractional PDE
• Optimal design in Material Sciences
• Micro-macro limit processes
• The interplay between discrete and continuous modelling in design and control
• The emergence of turnpike phenomena in long-time horizons
• Inversion and parameter identification
• Development of new computation tools and software

We are looking for excellent candidates with expertise in the areas of applied mathematics, PDE analysis, control theory, numerical analysis and computational mathematics who enjoy interdisciplinary work.

PhD in “Computational Methods and Mathematical Models for Sciences and Finance” (# of pos: 10)

The essential requirements for admission to the call are the following:

a) to be born after 31 October 1989;

b) to have no convictions that have been res judicata for a term of imprisonment of more than three years;

c) not to have been subject to “expulsion”, a disciplinary sanction provided for in the educational regulations of the SNS;

d) not to be in possession of a Ph.D. qualification issued by an Italian university, and in any case not to have benefited from a scholarship to attend a Ph.D. programme in Italy

For assessment, aimed at ascertaining the candidates’ aptitude for scientific research and their basic preparation for the course programme, each admissions commission has one hundred points: sixty points for the evaluation of qualifications and forty points for the oral exam. Candidates who have obtained at least forty points in the evaluation of qualifications will be admitted to the oral examination. In order to pass the oral exam candidates must obtain at least thirty points. Candidates must pass the oral exam in order to enroll in the postgraduate course.

Candidates who are not resident in Italy, or who have residency or domicile abroad for documented reasons of work, study or research, can take the test online, with procedures that guarantee the identification of the candidates and the public nature of the test. The selection commission will decide whether or not other candidates who request it can take the test online. The test can be held in Italian or English.

PhD in “Optimization methods in extremal geometry” (EWI2019-57)

Optimization techniques like linear and semidefinite programming find applications in many practical fields, but more and more also within mathematics, for instance as tool in proving theorems in combinatorics, geometry, etc. In this project, you as a PhD student will explore the use of optimization techniques to tackle problems in extremal geometry such as the sphere-packing problem, the kissing number problem, and other related questions. As PhD student, you will be supervised by Dr. Fernando M. de Oliveira. Filho of the optimization group at TU Delft. The project should offer you an opportunity to learn a great deal about optimization and its applications to geometry and combinatorics; there is moreover the opportunity to conduct independent research into topics of your interest. The position also offers generous funds for travelling.

PhD position in Geometry

The successful candidate will collaborate in research and teaching with members of the research group “Differential geometry and geometric structures”, in particular, they are expected to engage in work on a doctoral thesis at the cross roads of differential and discrete geometry. Teaching duties involve exercise classes and seminars for mathematics students and students on the geometry teacher training programme at the Institute, at a load of about 3 weighted hours per year (e.g., tutorial classes carry a weight of 0.5).
