The international Doctoral Training in Mathematical Sciences in Paris – MathInParis – Cofunded by Marie Sklodowska-Curie Actions offers 40 PhD fellowships within the framework of the European Horizon 2020 program “Marie Sklodowska-Curie Co-funding of Regional, National and International Programmes”.

This project has received funding from the European Uninion’s Seventh Framework Programme for research, technological development and demonstration under grant agreement n°754362

The main features of the program is to enhance the potential and future career perspective of young researchers by offering :

1- an extremely attractive place in FSMP network for international brilliant students planning to prepare a PhD in mathematics
2- a strengthened advising
3- a broadened support for career development


MathInParis Doctoral programme grants 40 PhD projects spread over 2 calls in 2017-2018 and 2018-2019.

Contractual conditions

The PhD projects have to be supervised and supported by one (or more) researchers and hosted in one of the laboratories of the FSMP network. Fellows will enroll in one of the three Doctoral schools of Paris.
The PhD project can also be in partnership with Industry.

A research visit abroad of at least two months will be mandatory and organized also in order to promote the international visibility of the student.

Laureates of the programme will sign a contract, starting in September 1st 2019 (at the earliest), with one the FSMP universities or institutions. They will get a 2 710 € as monthly gross salary (including employer cost) for 36 months.

It is mandatory that call candidates find a potential advisor into the FSMP network (how to find an advisor) and contact the director of the corresponding host laboratory and the director of the corresponding local doctoral school before filling the online application form of COFUND MathInParis programme.

Eligibility criteria

All candidates must have a Master degree (or equivalent) at the time of their enrollment and should speak French or English.

There is no nationality or age criteria but the applicant must :

* Not have resided or carried out their main activity (work, studies, etc.) in France for more than 12 months in the 3 years immediately before the deadline of the call (April, 1st of 2019).

* At the time of the call deadline (April, 1st 2019), all applicants must be in the first four years (full-time equivalent research experience) of their research career and have not been awarded of a doctoral degree.

If you are interested in applying for a PhD fellowship, please register online. Fill the online form and upload each documents listed below as a .pdf file.

This is a 2-phase call for application :

First phase : from December 15th 2018 to April 1st 2019 at 11.59 pm (Paris Time) : submission of all applications. Documents to upload are :

  • A curriculum vitae,
  • A cover letter,
  • A Master certificate, diplomas or grades of M1/M2.

Applicants will also have to fill the name and e-mail of the future thesis advisor. He/She’ll receive an automatic email to upload some documents. Applicants must be sure the advisor is a FSMP laboratory member and they have to chose the corresponding laboratory and doctoral school (list of FSMP laboratories).

Second phase : from April, 14th to May, 6th 2019 : for pre-selected applicants only.

Pre-selected students will have to upload  :

  • A detailed scientific project including : goals, methods and timeline. This document must be signed by the thesis advisor,
  • An ethical issues questionnaire (download the document here),
  • Documents proving each eligibility criterion is respected (copies of previous employments, university grades, utility bills, entry/exist stamps in passport, etc.) If not provided, application will be automatically rejected.

Candidates will also need to request via the online form the following recommendations from qualified profesionals who will then submit letters online (a direct link will be sent to them via an automatic email) : a letter from the doctoral school director and the laboratory director. You may also ask a letter to other professors if you wish.

Timing and selection procedure

April, 1st 2019 (11.59 pm, Paris time): deadline for the submission of applications. After verifying its eligibility, each application is submitted to the COFUND MathInParis steering committee and the head (or representative) of each Doctoral School.

April, 13th 2019: a short-list of selected candidates will be produced. Non-selected applicants will receive a notification and pre-selected candidates will be asked to provide further documents (above-mentioned). They will also receive a notifcation to attend an interview in Paris and instruction to prepare their travel and stay.

If necessary, travel (ticket in economic class) and/or accomodation expenses will be covered by MathInParis for 3 days. (All expenses must be checked with the program director before booking) This will provide enough time to each applicant to visit their hosting laboratory and to finalise their oral presentation together with their future thesis advisor. Interviews could be arranged by videoconference.

May, 6th 2019: deadline of the second phase. All pre-selected candidates will have to produce the additional information required.

May, 13th to May, 18th 2019: Interviews by the COFUND MathInParis scientific committee and visit of the laboratory.

May, 20th 2019: Final results.
